FAQ: Your Questions, Answered
Welcome to Calibrate Pilates Studio. We know starting something new can bring up a lot of questions — and we love that. This page is here to give you an honest, clear picture of what we do, how we work, and what you can expect when you walk through our doors. If you don't find what you're looking for, please reach out. We genuinely want to hear from you.
What Is Classical Pilates?
-
A: Pilates is for every body — and we mean that literally. Hip replacements welcome. Pre and postpartum welcome. Big and tall, short and small. 25 or 65, it doesn't matter. The beauty of this method is that it focuses entirely on YOUR body — making it stronger, more flexible, more stable, and building stamina in a way that's specific to you. The apparatus adjusts to meet you, not the other way around. Come as you are. The practice meets you here.
-
A: Classical Pilates refers to the original system developed by Joseph Pilates — the full body of work he created, taught, and passed down to his students. Many studios today offer reformer-only or contemporary classes that use a single piece of equipment or a modernized version of the method. Classical Pilates is different because it draws from the full apparatus — the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, and more — each piece designed with a specific purpose that the others can't fully replicate. At Calibrate, we work across that full system, honoring the movement method Joe created while meeting the modern body where it is. Because everything has to evolve — Joe never worked with someone hunched over a smartphone or stiff from a day at a desk — and the best teachers always have.
-
A: Congratulations — mat Pilates is actually the purest and most challenging expression of the method. Without springs or apparatus to assist you, every movement has to come from you. The other equipment — the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrels — was developed to supplement the mat work and help train the body in different ways. The Reformer, for example, was originally created for those who weren't yet strong enough to perform the full mat sequence. Each piece has its own purpose and value, but the mat is ultimately where we track real progress. So if you've been doing mat work, you've already been doing the real thing.
-
A: Everyone. Truly. We work with people across a wide range of ages, backgrounds, fitness levels, and movement histories. What classical Pilates requires isn't a particular body type or ability level — it asks for curiosity, consistency, and a willingness to pay attention. If you bring those things, the method will meet you there.
Your First Session & What to Expect
-
A: Not at all — and honestly, most people only know Pilates from Instagram. That's a great place to start. Whether you've never tried it, you've done some mat work, or you've taken classes at another studio, your first session at Calibrate is designed to meet you exactly where you are. We'll introduce you to the equipment, walk you through the foundations, and make sure you feel confident before you ever step into a group class. No experience required — just curiosity.
-
A: It depends — and that's kind of the point. If you're brand new to Pilates or you've only ever followed along with a video online, then yes, we'll start with a private session so we can introduce you to the equipment and build a real foundation before you join a group. But if you've trained at another studio, we'll have a conversation first. We'll talk about your experience level, what equipment you've worked on, how comfortable you are with transitions, and where you feel confident. From there, we figure out the best path together — and there's even a class that might be a perfect fit for someone who knows Pilates but hasn't worked in a classical or group setting before. Almost nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before anything else, I just want to talk to you.
-
A: Before you ever commit to anything, you're welcome to come in for a complimentary 30-minute consultation — in person, by phone, or whatever works best for you. In person is my favorite because I get to show you the studio, walk you through the equipment, and just talk. We'll cover your goals, your history, and what brought you to Pilates in the first place — because the catalyst matters. What was it that made you start looking? And more importantly, what does success actually look like to you? Not the surface answer — the real one. I'm not here to pitch you. I'm here to listen, to understand what you're actually dealing with, and to figure out together whether Calibrate is the right place for you.
-
A: Before you arrive, your instructor will reach out — by phone, email, or text — to get a sense of your background, experience level, and anything we should know going in. That way, when you walk through the door, we're ready for you. Your hour is your hour. We want you on the equipment and moving — not sitting and talking. The intake conversation happens beforehand so your session can start the moment you do.
-
A: Both private and group sessions are 50 minutes. This is standard in the Pilates industry — the remaining time is used to wipe down and reset the equipment for the next client. What I can tell you is that 50 focused, intentional minutes on the apparatus is a full experience. You won't leave feeling like anything was missing.
-
A: Above everything, be comfortable. Truly. Form-fitting clothing is ideal because it helps your instructor see how your body is moving and make adjustments — but if you show up in sweatpants and a t-shirt, we will absolutely make it work. The last thing I want is for you to spend your session worrying about what you're wearing instead of how you're feeling. Layers are a good idea — the studio runs cool, but your body will warm up quickly once you get moving. A few practical things to keep in mind: tie your hair back so it doesn't get caught in the springs (we keep hair ties at the studio if you forget), and skip the lotion or body oil beforehand — it makes hands and feet slip on the foot bar and straps. Also leave anything with exposed metal at home: zippers, rivets, buckles, belt hardware. As for socks — sticky socks are available for purchase in our studio boutique, but they're optional. Bare feet are always welcome here.
-
A: Just bring yourself — and a water bottle if you like to have one on hand. If it's your first visit, your instructor will reach out beforehand so you already know what to expect when you walk in. Plan to arrive at least 5 minutes early. Classes start on time — not because the door locks behind you, but because the warmup is an essential part of the session. We begin by laying down, giving the spine a rest from gravity, and breathing deeply. Every Pilates class has a flow, and each exercise intentionally builds on the one before it. If you miss the beginning, you miss the foundation for everything that follows.
Pricing & Memberships
-
A: Not at all — and honestly, most people only know Pilates from Instagram.
-
A: There are three founding tiers — Calibrate Elite, Calibrate Select, and Calibrate Circle — each designed for a different level of commitment and offering its own set of benefits, from unlimited classes and complimentary privates to locked-in pricing and exclusive experiences. Full details on each tier are shared with registered members. Click "Register Your Interest" to get the full picture.
-
A: We'll be sharing full pricing details — including drop-in rates, class packages, and standard membership options — closer to our November opening. We're being thoughtful about how we structure things, and we want to get it right before we put numbers out into the world. Click "Register Your Interest" to make sure you know when everything is available.
Scheduling & Cancellations
-
A: Scheduling at Calibrate is handled through our studio app, which will be available this fall. New clients — don't worry about figuring that out on your own right away. When we connect for your consultation or first session, we'll get everything set up for you. Once you're in the system, booking is simple and straightforward.
-
A: Yes — and it's one of our favorite perks to talk about. Because our classes are intentionally small, founding members receive priority access to the schedule, which means you get to find your class, your time, and your people from day one. Consistency is a big part of what makes Pilates work, and priority booking makes that easier to build. For non-founding members, don't worry — as demand grows, so does the schedule. We will always add classes to meet the community where it is.
-
A: Our cancellation window is 12 hours before your scheduled session. If you no-show without canceling, a $20 fee applies — the same for everyone. We keep it simple. When you sign your client agreement, we'll walk through the policy together and make sure you have everything you need.
-
A: A little bit. Private sessions are scheduled directly with your instructor and require a confirmed appointment — they're not something you drop into. Group classes run on a set schedule and can be reserved through our app as spots become available. Both follow the same cancellation policy. If you have questions about coordinating privates around your group class schedule, just ask — we'll make it work.
About the Studio & Instructor
-
A: Every Calibrate instructor holds a comprehensive certification from a nationally recognized Pilates program — Peak Pilates, Balanced Body, Stott, and others that meet the same rigorous standard. And rigorous is the right word. A real Pilates certification isn't a weekend course. It starts with 500 hours of training, followed by a comprehensive written exam, personal proficiency testing on every piece of apparatus, and both group and private teaching evaluations. Add to that 20+ hours observing credentialed teachers and 20+ hours of supervised teaching — and that's just Level 1. Our instructors hold Level 2 and Level 3 certifications as well, representing hundreds of additional hours of training and teaching. All Calibrate instructors are also CPR and AED certified.
Beyond credentials, every instructor at Calibrate was chosen deliberately — people I know, people I've watched teach, people whose values align with what this studio stands for. Different instructors bring different styles, and that's intentional. You may connect deeply with one instructor and prefer another — and that's completely okay. What every single one of them shares is a genuine investment in your progress and a commitment to showing up fully for you, every session.
-
A: A few things, but the one we come back to most is this: you will be seen here. We are a small, intentional, fully-equipped studio — not a big-box fitness environment, not a franchise, not a place where you're a number on a roster. Every person who comes through our doors gets genuine attention. Your history matters. Your body matters. The way you feel when you leave matters. We built Calibrate to be the kind of place where that level of care is the standard, not the exception.
-
A: McKinney is a community that's growing fast and deserves access to high-quality, classical Pilates — the kind of work that until now has mostly lived in larger cities or big box gyms. We wanted to bring a boutique, fully-equipped classical studio to a community that's ready for it. McKinney felt like exactly the right place to start.
-
A: In most cases, yes — and the classical apparatus is often remarkably effective for people working around injuries or managing specific conditions. Please share everything relevant during your consultation and first session. Our policy is simple: when in doubt, we refer out. If something requires medical clearance before we work together, we'll tell you directly. We'd rather have that conversation upfront than make assumptions in either direction.
-
A: Yes — and this is actually where the classical full-apparatus system shines. The apparatus can be adjusted to support, assist, and protect the body in ways that mat or other forms of exercise simply can't. Whether you're navigating pregnancy, rebuilding after delivery, or working through recovery from joint replacement surgery, we will meet you exactly where you are. We'll ask for medical clearance where appropriate and stay in close communication with you throughout. Your body is not a limitation here — it's where we start.
-
A: We'd love to hear from you. Reach out through email at info@calibratepilatesstudio.com — whether you have a specific question, want to talk through which membership might be right for you, or just want to say hello before we open. No question is too small. We built this studio for real people, and we mean it when we say the door is open.
We open in McKinney in the first week of November 2026, and we can't wait to meet you. If something here sparked a question that wasn't answered, or if you just want to get a feel for who we are before you commit to anything — please reach out. That conversation is genuinely our favorite part. We'll see you on the apparatus.
